Three Awarded For Contribution To Malay Journalism

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Three writers who contributed to the development of Malay journalism have been awarded by the Malay Journalists Association.

Former Utusan Melayu journalist Mohd Said Zahari received the National Excellent Journalist Award in recognition of his work towards the development of Malay journalism.

Utusan Malaysia deputy editor-in-chief I Zaini Hassan and Berita Harian entertainment editor Akmal Abdullah received the Malay Journalist Awards.

The three were presented with the awards by the Sultan of Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah at a dinner ceremony here last night. They also received certificates and plaques from the Sultan.

Mohd Said, 81, is the former Utusan Melayu editor-in-chief and was held under the Internal Security Act in Singapore for 17 years in the 1960s after he was accused of being a communist.

He also led protests against the takeover of Utusan Melayu by Umno during that period.

Mohd Said was instrumental in fighting for the country`s independence through his writings in the newspaper.

In his speech, association president Datuk Yazid Othman said the presentation of the awards was held to acknowledge the contribution and sacrifices of Malay journalists in their service to the society.
