Book On Eminent Malay Journalists To Hit Market Soon

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - A book on the life and times of eminent journalists and the early years of Malay newspapers by Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia senior consultant Tan Sri Mazlan Nordin will hit the market next month.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Media and Communication Studies Centre lecturer Dr Mohd Safar Hashim said the work was Mazlan‘s labour of love as a journalist for more than 50 years.

Titled “Tokoh dan Akhbar Melayu: Penebus Peminggiran Melayu” (“Eminent Journalists and Malay newspapers: Champions Against the Malay Marginalisation”, he said the book arrayed the contribution of legendary journalists, especially Abdullah Munsyi.

“Mazlan started researching on eminent Malay journalists since becoming a fellow at UKM‘s Media and Communication Centre from 2004 to 2006.

“Among them were Abdullah Munsyi, Ibrahim Yaacob, Rahim Kajai, Ishak Haji Muhammad, Ahmad Boestaman and A Samad Ismail. Their life and contribution are not known by many,” said Safar.

Safar said after his retirement, Mazlan continued writing as a columnist in the New Straits Times, Asia Week and now in Mingguan Malaysia, and authored a book on the second prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein.

Mazlan‘s illustrious career as a journalist involved working with the Utusan Group, Voice of America, Berita Harian, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as editor-in-chief and later its chairman, and New Straits Times.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate in communication by UKM in 2005 and named national journalism laureate in 2000 by Malaysian Press Institute and UKM eminent journalist this year.
