RI Optimistic Asean Community To Be Realized In 2015
Manado, North Sulawesi - Indonesia is optimistic an Asean Community covering 10 countries in Southeast Asia will be established in 2015, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said.
“The formation of an Asean Community has been agreed on and provided for in the Asean Charter which was adopted on December 15, 2008, which will automatically boost Asean`s authority in the world community,” Wirajuda said on the sidelines of a meeting of 21 Indonesian ambassadors to Asean countries and Asean partner countries here on Friday.
Efforts to realize the establishment of the Asean Community have been made by boosting the Asean sub-regional economy through the development of communication networks and in the air transportation sector, he said.
The air links that have been established in a number of countries in the Asean region will help support the efforts, he said.
The minister said the Asean Community was based on three pillars, namely a political and security community, an economic community and a socio-cultural community.
“Indonesia itself was the initiator of the establishment of a security community and has played an important role in formulating the other two pillars,” he said.
Hassan presided over the meeting themed “Towards Realizing the Asean Community in 2015.”
He said ambassadors as the spearheads of Indonesian diplomacy needed latest information regarding the architecture in the Asia Pacific region that could affect the Asean integration such as the holding of “Trilateral Summit” with China, Japan and South Korea.
Others include the formation of Asia Pacific Community initiated by Australia and the Japanese idea of an East Asia Community, he said.
