Ipoh, Malaysia - Perak is set to host the country`s first multi-religious prayer ceremony in conjunction with the nation`s 52nd year of independence.

The Sept 19 event at the Ipoh City Hall at 3pm will see about 1,000 devotees from various religions conducting their respective prayers for 20 minutes each.

State Non-Islamic Affairs committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the ceremony was aimed at praying for the country`s welfare and to promote peace and unity.

“It is something different and meaningful as we hope to negate the negative energy in the state and country. Every religion has its own separate prayer in its own way, and this is an attempt to bring them together to show that we are indeed 1Malaysia,” said Dr Mah after adherents of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism met here yesterday.

Mah added that there would also be song and dance performances by religious and cultural bodies followed by a buffet dinner.

He said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir would open the event, and the state would donate RM25,000 to the organising committee.

Event organising chairman Tai Foo Lowai said the ceremony was a small gesture to repay the Government for bringing prosperity to the people.

“We collectively gather all the religions` prayers to send out positive energy from Perak to the other states,” he said, urging council members and disciples to participate.
