Workshop for Asean youths closes with certificate presentation ceremony

Brunei - The first Asean e-Culture Exchange Workshop for Youth 2009 to be held in Brunei Darussalam came to a close yesterday with a certificate presentation ceremony.

Held at the SEAMEO VOCTECH building in Gadong, more than 30 participants aged 18 to 40 from local and foreign institutions across the region came to attend the three-day workshop.

Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Hj Jailani Hj Buntar, presented the certificates to the students yesterday.

This year, the participants had to undertake two workshop activities: the e-Atlas of Culture: Web Technology and the Faces of Bandar Seri Begawan.

In the first activity, they were divided into groups from the same economy, in which they had to identify the places of interest from their home countries along with annotations and pictures.

The second activity, participants were mixed up for the collection of cultural information project. The participants collected their materials during their cultural visit to various national places, such as the Brunei Museum and the Royal Regalia.

"It`s a very good experience. The most important thing for me is sharing our cultures with each other. It`s especially easy now as we can use digital methods such as the Internet," said Primus Pondumita, a participant from Indonesia.

Two local participants from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) shared the same enthusiasm when they told the Weekend Bulletin of their "brilliant" experience.

"It was brilliant. I see it as a stepping-stone for Brunei to further advance in technology. We didn`t just learn about other cultures, but our own culture too, as we youngsters tend to forget," said Hjh Norkamaliah Hj Osman.

"The field trips were excellent and the other students brought many pretty pictures of their home towns. Now I view Asian countries differently and would love to go and visit all of them."

AITI, in a statement, expressed their hope that similar initiatives could be achieved by other relevant agencies to gain more awareness in harnessing the importance of incorporating ICT in daily activities, in particular, developing local content such as the national heritage.

At the same time, the ICT Company is encouraging the deepening of valuable mutual collaboration and friendship among the 10 Asean member states. Ben Ng
