Sagang award is a Malay world award given to figure or personage dedicated to art life, a work considered excellent, qualified, and monumental, also thought that is able to actuate the dynamics of Malay culture in certain domain. Sagang bestowal is given by Sagang Foundation, is a foundation in Riau Pos group that takes into account toward the preservation and development of Malay culture. This Sagang presentation is a commitment of Sagang Foundation to Riau as a country that being one of terraces of the development of Malay culture. Riau is regent in its trip had donated a gold of culture named Malay language that was being the unifier of languages within Indonesia. Malay language was the pioneer of Bahasa Indonesia used recently. A contribution and donation that is invaluable.

 “Sagang” word derives from the treasure of life tradition of Riau Malay people in coastal area. This word was popular to fishermen lived in the beach of Malaysia peninsular and surroundings. Sagang is a name of a piece of small wood with 2-3 cm in its diameter.  It is usually used as buffer of ridge of houses in coastal area. This small piece of wood is fastened blocked the diagonal of the house roof expanse. It is used to keep the balance if a storm strikes. The fisherman society used to call “west sagang,” since this small wood is very helpful in muffling the shake of west wind. Fishermen used to put this wood to support sail expanse. Its function is to keep the sail expanse to keep open in receiving the wind blow that the ship is stable to move quickly. “Sagang” word chosen is because it contains a deep philosophical meaning. Sagang is a spirit symbol to be a buffer/supporter, promoter and motivator in creating Malay culture. It is a symbol of no retreat, a non-quiver motivation what a great challenge faced.

Since established in 1996, Sagang award had given award in various categories. Annually the award is always added.

2. 1997 gave three categories:

1. Sagang Best Book was given to Sandiwara Hang Tuah, by Taufik Ikram Jamil
2. Sagang Best Man of Culture was given to Tenas Effendy
3. Sagang Special Institution was given to Selembayung

3. 1998 gave three categories:

1. Sagang Best Artist was given to Ediruslan Pe Amanriza
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Cakap Rampai-rampai Budaya Melayu di Riau, by UU Hamidy
3. Sagang Special Award was given to the Foundation of Kebudayaan Indra Sakti, Penyengat Island

4. 1999 gave three categories:

1. Sagang Best Artist /Man of Culture was given to Hasan Yunus
2. Sagang Best Book was given to H. Soeman Hs; Bukan Pencuri Anak Perawan, written by Fakhrunnas MA Jabbar
3. Special Category of Institution/Organization/Sagang Best Cultural Work Art was given to Sanggar Tari Laksemana, Pekanbaru.

5. 2000 gave four categories:

1. Sagang Best Artist was given to Solaiman Syafi`ie
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Sebuah Telaah tentang Buku Tsamarat Al Muhimmah, by Mahdini
3. Best Sagang Serantau was given to Gapena (Gabungan Persatuan Penulis Nasional Malaysia, Malaysia national writers)
4. Sagang Special Institution was given to the foundation of Sempena Riau

6. 2001 gave four categories:

1. Sagang Best Artist was given to Dantje`s Muis
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Percikan Kisah Membentuk Provinsi Riau, by Taufik Ikram Jamil et.al.
3. Sagang Best Man of Culture from Shoreline was given to Abu Hassan Sham
4. Sagang Special Institution was given to  the publisher board of Riau university, Badan Penerbit Universitas Riau (Unri Press)

7. 2002 gave five categories:

1. Sagang Best Artist was given to Sudarno Mahyudin
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Kandil Akal di Pelataran Budi, by Raja Hamzah Yunus
3. Sagang Best Music was given to cassette of Panggil Aku Sakai
4. Best Sagang Serantau was given to TV Suria Singapore
5. Sagang Special Institution was given to Sanggar Tasik, Bengkalis

8. 2003 gave five categories:

1. Sagang Best Artist was given to Taufik Ikram Jamil
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Rumah Melayu; Memangku Adat Menjemput Zaman, by Mahyudin Al Mudra
3. Sagang Best Alternative Work was given to Senam Zapin Payung Sekaki
4. Sagang Special Institution was given to Sanggar Malay
5. Sagang Best Man of Culture from Shoreline was given to Tengku Luckman Sinar

9. 2005 gave six categories:

1. Sagang Best artist was given to Yusmar Yusuf
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Menjadi Batu, by Taufik Ikram Jamil
3. Sagang Best Alternative Work Songket Melayu Pekanbaru by Evi Meiroza Herman
4. Sagang Special Institution was given to Sanggar dan Pusat Pelatihan Sri Gemilang
5. Sagang Best Man of Culture from Shoreline was given to A. Latif Bakar
6. Best Cultural and Journalism work was won by Riau: Negeri Sahibul Kitab by Amarzan Lubis/Tempo

10. 2006 gave six categories:

1. Sagang Best artist was given to Iwan Irawan Permadi
2. Sagang Best Book was given to Sebatang Ceri di Serambi, by Fakhrunnas MA Jabbar
3. Sagang Best Alternative Work Songket Melayu was given to Batik Riau, by Septina Rusli
4. Sagang Special Institution was given Latah Tuah
5. Sagang Best Man of Culture from Shoreline was given Maman S Mahayana, Jakarta
6. Best Cultural and Journalism work was won by Cukup Kami Saja yang Buta Huruf, by Ade Chandra
