Malay Language

Malay language constitutes the interesting topic for both individual and institutional which engage in language studies. It has become the centre focus of linguists` interest. Just to mention a few,  Dyen (1953), Kridalaksana (1974) and Nothofer (1975), Collins (1980), Blust (1982) Adelaar (1984) and other researchers are some of the linguists who had devoted their study on Malay language. In addition, Pusat Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Bahasa (Centre for Indonesia Language Training and Development) put special emphasis of the study on Malay language and its dialects that develop in Indonesia. Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (The Institute of Language and Literature) in Malaysia has also conducted several researches and produced books on Malay dialects existing in both Malaysia and outside Malaysia. Moreover, there are several researchers in Brunei and other Malay countries who are interested in Malay language. Malay language subject on this website is divided into three subcategories. The first subcategory, which encompasses the history and development of Malay language, is the introductory explanation for the rest of two subcategories. The second and the third subcategory constitute the main subject.  The second subcategory identifies the classification of Malay dialects and isolects. The explanation on the mentioned subcategory will explore dialects and isolects of several regions in the Malay Archipelago. The last subcategory, the complementary of the previous subcategory, will present contemporary subjects pertaining to Malay language, its dialects, and isolects.

The classification of Malay language is not intended to limit, to simplify, and to prioritize a category more than other. They are purposed to facilitate the readers in digging wealthier and more structured information on the Malay language subjects instead. Hence, suggestions and critics from the readers will be valuable contribution for enriching this subject. (SR/bhs/03/07-07)
