Malay Culture

Weaving

Weaving is a product of human creativity that involves placing two sets of thread, or wood fiber, cotton, silk, etc. One of the two sets of thread, pakan (the woven threads placed across each other), is placed across another thread namely lungsing (the woven threads placed stretched out on pakan) and later are turned into cloth. The quality of weaving depends on the quality of its material, color, shape and design. The type of weaving is linked to the system of knowledge, culture, belief, environmental condition and the system of the social structure of the society. The system mentioned above is different from one society to another, and the result of weaving is accordingly different.

The product of weaving, as a part of cultural system in society, is related to the aspect of aesthetic, traditional ceremony, religious and symbolic status. The specific type of woving pattern has a certain meaning. Therefore, all weavings, including Malay weaving, has a specific type that represents its culture. In the Malay society, the woven cloth is used for covering bashful attitude, welcoming behavior, upholding norms and avoiding disaster. Through this aspect, one may see the profound norms, religion, ethic and aesthetic exerted within the cloth. Therefore, there is a pledge among the Malay people that said pantang memakai memandai-mandai (one should not wear a cloth to show of). The unique aspect of Malay weaving appears through its pattern and shape which are inspired by plants (flower, bud, leaf, fruit and root), animal, sky‘s material and calligraphy; besides by certain material shapes such as lentik bersusun, the shape of stars, the shape of crescent, etc. This portal explains comprehensively the Malay weaving based on each district of Malay where it was created.
