Silat as game: Silat which is performed in various ceremonies. This type of martial art features the aesthetic elements of silat movements. Silat pedang (sword), silat parisai (shell), and silat sembah (kneeing) are some of the examples.

Silat as self-defense: this type of martial art is purposed to defend oneself from physical treat. Generally, the self-defense silat has particular methods of training and divided into several levels and grading.
