Kawin Jujur

Kawin Jujur is a form of exogamy marriage practiced in Malay culture in which the bridegroom makes a payment (jujur) to the bride. Kawin Jujur recognizes patrilineal lineage. As the payment goes, the wife and the children should give up their rights and social positions attached to their former family before getting into her husband`s family. Kawin Jujur demands the wife to live in her husband`s place, or at least in one of his family`s.

Kawin Jujur marriage once prevailed among Rejang people in Bengkulu. This tradition has worn out however, except in the hinterlands of Bengkulu. It has been replaced with Kawin Semendo tradition from Minangkabau. The latter started to enter Bengkulu during the reign of Sungai Lemau Kingdom in the area, from 1625-1861.
