Kawin Semendo is a Malay form of marriage that is done without any payment (jujur) from the bridegroom to the bride. In the marriage, the husband must stay in the bride`s place and will be obliged to descend children in matrilineal lineage. He must also give up his rights and social position attached to his own family. Kawin Semendo is common in Minangkabau.
