1. History

Based on the original script written by K‘ang-tai and Wan-chen from Wu Dynasty (222-280 C.E), the time of establishment of Koying Kingdom is estimated in the third century C.E. The T‘ung-tien encyclopedia written by Tu-Yu (375-812 C.E) contains the information relating to the Koying existence which then cited by Ma-tu-an-lin in the encyclopedia of Wen-hsien-t‘ung-k‘ao.

The script depicted the Koying as a volcanoes area which situated about 5000 li east of Chu-po (Tupo).  Chu-po was a kingdom established at the same period with the Koying Kingdom. It is estimated that the center of Kingdom was at the edge of Wen gulf, surrounding of  present-day Tebo estuary. As depicted by the script, the active volcano filled the northern side of Koying, and Wen Gulf adorned the southern with Pu-Lei Island inside. The indigenous people of Pu-Lei Island had dark skin color, pearl-white teeth with red-rimmed eye. Seemingly, these identifications signify the inclusion of those inhabitants in the proto-negrito races which were assumed to be the outpost race resided in the Sumatra lands.

Those proto-negrito people conducted commercial trade by barter system. It was carried out through mutual exchange with foreign merchants who came to the island. Chickens, pork and fruits were their main goods offered, and they asked for metals from the foreign merchants in return.

According to Chinese writings, Koying had possessed several ports and developed trade cooperation especially with the western part people of Sumatra. Nonetheless, Koying hadn‘t established the directly trade relationship to China. Those Chinese writings are from India and Funan (Vietnam) sources.

In terms of population, The Koying Kingdom constituted the densely populated kingdom with pearl, gold, silver, jade, crystal, and areca all as the main sources of their income.

The exact location of Koying is still unknown. As described above, the Koying Kingdom was about 500 li from Chu-Po (Tupo; Tebo estuary). Therefore, it is estimated that the Koying position was in the vicinity of Bukit Barisan (Chain of hill) region. Meanwhile the ports were the war loot that taken over after the downfall of Tupo harbor in Tebo estuary.

Throughout the history, there was a sedimentation process bringing about the shallowness of the river in Tebo estuary. For that reason, Koying then moved their harbor to the Tungkal estuary.
