Historical Mosque

Mosque is a building built by Muslims to perform religious ritual prayer. In Indonesia, it always takes kiblat as its direction. There is a mihrab, where Imam (the leader of shalat) leads shalat, that mostly rather protrude to the direction of kiblat. The pulpit where Muslim preacher give a sermon usually stands nearby the mihrab. In addition, on the roof, there is a dome that its amount differs from one mosque to another.

Historically, not only had the mosques been used as the place of prayer, but used also as the place of discussion, and as the center for development of Islamic society, like educational and social activity. Regarding giving of the names, the big mosque is whether called jami‘ mosque, agung mosque or raya mosque. And the smaller mosques are whether called mushalla, langgar or surau.

The mosque, more often than not, was built whether by famous ulama, king or several numbers of ordinary people. In the history of Islamic civilization, including Malay history, every sultan built his own mosque that located nearby the complex of his palace. Therefore, most of Malay palaces in the past left the mosque as the proof of the unification between religion and culture within the Malay history.
