BKPBM and PSSAT to Hold International Academic Writing Competition
Yogyakarta, MelayuOnline.com- The Center for Research and Development of Malay Culture (BKBM) in cooperation with the Center for Southeast Asian Social Studies of Gadjah Mada University (PSSAT-UGM) will hold International Academic Writing Competition on “Asean Malay World: Globalism and Multiculturalism.” The competition is open for public participation since August 15th, 2008 and will be closed on January 5th, 2009.
The competition is based on the fact that globalism spans multi-continental distances. Along the fast advancement of information and communication technology, globalism has been capable of breaking through the space of time and geographic boundaries.
Such phenomenon, later on, fosters massive movement of humankind to visit other nations hence cultural clashes are the inexorable things anymore. Two consequences appearing as the results of such phenomenon are the emergence of universally cultural identities called pop-culture and the emergence of locally cultural identities, which is a resistance to the globalization era.
Globalism likewise occurs in Southeast Asian, an area wherein multiculturalism develops massively. Though the area is dominated by the Malay people, cultural clashes and different political and economical interests might cause horizontal conflicts.
The competition is aimed at compiling fresh ideas on Malay cultural studies in Southeast Asian in the globalization era from the perspective of multiculturalism. Besides, the competition is also designed to enrich the academic studies on multiculturalism happening in Southeast Asian.
The competition‘s committee provides several topics below:
The role of Southeast Asian in establishing multiculturalism
The face of pop-Malay
Globalism and Malay political mainstream
Gender issues in the modern Malay world
