Carving

Carving is an art created by removing material on wood, hard shell of coconut, bamboo, stone, metal or other materials in order to create a desired shape. The desired shape often takes the form of beautiful pictures and wonderful adornments with sunken and convex shapes that is called relief. Another shape of carving is transparent. Carving has many topics inspired, more often than not, by floras, faunas, nature, human being and local legend. The unique shape and pattern of Malay carving is resulting from the stylization of both floral and faunal pattern, besides from calligraphy and natural pattern. Malay carving in Riau, for instance, developed three models of stilizied patterns of floras: kaluk pakis (fern curve), bunga-bungaan (flowers) and pucuk rebung (bamboo shoot); and of faunas: lining ants, hanging honeybees, group of duck, dragon and bird. Such carving can be seen at Malay ship, potsherd, tombstone, weapon, house and mosque‘s ornament, musical instrument, kingdom‘s regalia, decoration and other materials. This portal explains details of carving that available and developed in separated Malay districts.
