Tumasik Kingdom
1. History
There were some versions about the original name of Singapore. Pulau Ujung , or Pu-Lo-chung as being stated in the Chinese language, was considered the oldest name. Afterward, the country was called Salahit, or Selat (strait). This name was mentioned in the Hikayat (story) of Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munsyi. Then, it was named as Tumasek or Tumasik meaning swamp, or looks like a sea, which was the natural configuration of Singapura. The word “Tumasik” derived from ancient Java language and inscribed in the writings of Negarakartagama, Pararaton, and Sejarah Melayu (Malay History). After all, the Kingdom’s name was changed to Singapore and becoming popular since the 14th C.E.
The country was launched as a Kingdom by Hindu Malay King who, according to the certain writing, came from Palembang Sumatra. Singapore had ever been part of Crivijaya Kingdom, and conquered territory of Majapahit after the decline of Crivijaya. Respectively, Singapore was controlled by Malacca, Johor-Riau, and England in the European colonial expansion.
When its name was Tumasik, Singapore was ruled by Malay Kings. Nila Utama was the first and Paramesywara was the last Malay King as the Majapahit and Siam (Thailand) conquered the land. The usage of word Singapore was commenced in the period of Nila Utama. External pressures and the fast growing of Malacca strait resulted in the decline of the Kingdom

3. Kingdom Period
Those Kings were the rulers in the period of Hindu Malay. The period supposedly ended in the 14th century C.E. The coming of Islam more or less had an influence on the existence of the Kingdom. Singapore, then, was controlled by Malacca Kingdom and Riau-Johor Kingdom in 1400-1511 C.E. and in the 18th century respectively. Under the rule of Johor-Riau, Tumenggung who served as Sultan representative located in Lingga had the supreme authority over Singapore. As the Riau-Lingga Kingdom defeated by Dutch, Singapore was controlled by England. The European expansion remarked the end of the Malay ethnic domination.
