LIPI launches book on Portuguese Cultural Legacy in Indonesia

Jakarta - The Societal and Cultural Research Center of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) has launhed a book on footprints of Putuguese culture in Indonesia.

Titled "Bunga Angin Portugis di Nusantara" (Flowers of Portuguese Winds in Indonesia) and containing a collection of articles by the late LIPI researcher Paramita Rahaju Abdoerachman, the book was launched at a discussion on Wednesday attended among others by LIPI Deputy Chief Lukman Hakim, Portuguese Ambassador Jose Manuel Santos Braga and Paramita`s relatives.

The 280-page book, published by LIPI, the Indonesia-Portugal Friendship and Cooperation Association and Obor Foundation, consists of Paramita`s scientific writings on the history of the Portuguese presence in the Indonesian archipelago.

The articles among other things dwell on remnants of the Portuguese legacy in Jakarta and Ambon, the influence of Portuguese on the Malayan language vocabulary in Ambon and Central Maluku, the role of the Portuguese in the propagation of Chistianity in Solor and Flores, and on cooperative relations between kingdoms in Maluku, Portugal dan Spain.

LIPI Deputy Chief Lukman said the book was a significant contribution to the literature on the Portuguese presence in Indonesia in the past.

"Very few historians have been interested in studying Portugal`s history so that there is a dearth of sources on Portuguese culture in Indonesia," he said.

The chairman of the Indonesia-Portugal Friendship and Cooperation Association Urip Santoso expressed hope the book would help the peoples of the two countires to understand each other better.

"We hope thereby relations between the two countries will further improve in the future," he said.
