The Classical Malay Language Phase
Some linguists said that the classical Malay language phase had commenced in the 15th C.E. The phase was marked by two important events: the coming of Islam to the Malay land and the influence of Arabic language on the Malay language. The phase also was preceded by the decreasing influence of Sanskrit language on the Malay language in the middle of the 14th C.E.
There are two interesting points underlying the classical Malay language phase. First, the influence of Arabic language on the Malay language. Second, the shifting usage of the Malay language for aesthetic and literature purposes. These two points were absent in the Malay language at the previous phase. (SR/bhs/15/07-07)
