Marwas
Marwas is the smallest kinds of gendang (drum). This traditional musical instrument made of hollow cylinder with parchment stretched tightly over the open sides and sounded by beating. The Marwas is one of the accompaniment music of zapin dance functioned as the maintainer of tone stability, and as the regulator of musical rhythmic harmony. It is also functioned as the rapping or rhythm. This musical instrument is especially used as peningkah (musical arrangement) in Mak Yong performance.
(Marwas is made of several materials: old wood of jackfruit tree, rattan used as a tying material and parchment. The hollow cylinder‘s tall is about 11 centimeters, while its diameter of circle on both sides is 18,5 centimeters. Marwas is played together with gambus and other musical instruments of zapin dance. Usually the zapin dance is accompanied by three marwasses that are sounded by different beatings during the performance.
